Why UAE homes get white scale, and how to stop it

If your shower head is crusted white, your glass doors never look clean and your kettle is full of flakes, your home has hard water. It is one of the most common problems we see in UAE villas and apartments.

What hard water is

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. You can’t see them in a glass, but when the water heats up or dries on a surface, the minerals stay behind as white scale, also called limescale.

Hot weather and hot water make it worse. Water heaters, kettles and shower heads run hot all day, so that is where scale builds up fastest.

What it does to your home

  • Shower heads and taps clog, and the spray gets weak and uneven.
  • Water heaters get a coat of scale on the element, so they work harder, use more power and fail early.
  • Glass, tiles and sinks get white marks that come back after every clean.
  • Skin and hair can feel dry, because soap doesn’t rinse off properly in hard water.

Why a normal filter doesn’t fix it

Cartridge filters, like the three in our Triple Jumbo, catch sand, rust and chlorine. Calcium and magnesium are dissolved in the water, so they pass straight through. That is why scale needs its own treatment.

What actually fixes it: a water softener

A water softener swaps the calcium and magnesium for sodium using a resin bed inside the tank. When the resin is full, the softener cleans itself with salt water, then carries on. You get soft water at every tap, including the shower and the heater.

For most villas, the best setup is a Triple Jumbo first, to protect the softener from sand and chlorine, then the Compact Water Softener. Apartments can use the Tru Soft Mini.

What a softener needs

No softener is maintenance-free. The salt needs topping up, and the resin and settings need checking. On our maintenance plan we handle all of it during the visit every 4 months.

Questions people ask

Does a filter remove hard water?

No. Cartridge filters catch sand, rust and chlorine. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, which needs a water softener.

Will a softener make my water salty?

No. Salt is only used to clean the resin inside the softener. It is rinsed away and does not make your tap water taste salty.

How often does a softener need service?

We check it every 4 months, top up the salt and adjust the settings. Year one is free.
